Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - I really love the Burn Notice-esque cover...and the story's not bad!
Something About You by Julie James
Berkley Sensation, 2010
307 pages
Contemporary; Romance
4/5 stars

Summary: Assistant US Attorney Cameron Lynde is trying to relax in a hotel room when she hears the couple next door going at it; later she catches a glimpse of a man, who murdered the woman within. The FBI agent who comes to the case is Jack Pallas, a man with a grudge against Cameron. But they have to push their personal feelings aside in order to nab the killer...or do they?

Thoughts: I saw some reviews of this on other blogs and they were largely positive so I was excited. A large part of the story is how they each are (pretty rightfully) angry with the other. She is angry because he insulted her in vulgar terms on TV after she refused to prosecute a case that he spent two years undercover working on. He is mad because he thinks she had him transferred from Chicago to Nebraska in retaliation. These are legitimate reasons unlike some romantic misunderstandings.

He sounds very hot although his name is uncomfortably close to that famewhore bachelor Jake P (I'm pretty sure his last name starts with a P). He is also very brave as he was tortured for two days by a crime lord's gang without giving anything up. He is dedicated to his job and he is good at it. She is similarly devoted to law and justice and has experienced tremondous growth since their last encounter. I kept picturing her as Gabrielle Anwar (Fi on "Burn Notice," see Cover, although she doesn't seem to have a fondness for C-4). Together they are a very hot couple. One thing I really liked was that they hashed out their problems with each other before sleeping together-sometimes it seems as if couples sleep while still having mistrust.

Additionally the other characters are good. I loved Cameron's friends Collin and Amy although Amy isn't well-defined. I liked the other cops and special agents who are looking out for Cameron. The villain was certainly scary in his determination to do wrong but he wasn't absolutely terrifying like some of the best villains in literature are.

Then there is the thriller aspect. We find out pretty early on who committed the murder and that the person would like to silence Cameron but the two don't figure it out until much later. The final showdown scene made me think of Red Eye as her beautiful house is somewhat destroyed although spoiler-Jake and Cameron survive ;-)

I'm still not a big fan of contemporary romances but this was good.

Warning: Can't say that I liked their use of the f-word-a bit too prolific for my tastes.

Overall: Sparkling good fun-charming protagonists and a thriller to boot!

Cover: Reminds me of Michael and Fi on Burn Notice, which is a very good thing!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Ditto!
DITTO to all other positive reviews about this book. I have now read all of Ms. James's books. I'm SO glad I discovered her. Enjoy!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Something About You- A Joyfully Recommended Title
Cameron Lynde is a heavy hitting Assistant U. S. Attorney with a great track record in her trials, and she loves the satisfaction it gives her. However, when Cameron first joined she let her boss convince her to make a decision that has bugged her ever since, along with the detective she said 'no' to. Three years later Cameron is a witness to a murder, and who should be the lead detective but Jack. Cameron finds herself right back where they met, with her attraction to Jack stronger than ever.

Jack Pallas worked hard to bring down a drug king only to be told that the U.S. Attorney's Office won't take his case to trial. In the heat of the moment, Jack said things that cost him a lot. Now, he's finally back at his old office in Chicago and ends up with a case that puts him and Cameron together on another case. Jack wonders if fate has it in for him, but he knows if the blow up hadn't come, he would have pursued his interest in Cameron.

Cameron and Jack have to clear the air between them if possible, while trying to find out who Cameron saw that night. Clearing the air might not be all that easy because of a promise Cameron made, however, those promises fade away in the heat of their combined passion. When it becomes very obvious a mole is involved somewhere, Jack must turn over every rock to see what's under it if he's going to keep Cameron alive and capture both the mole and the murderer.

What can you do when your biggest mistake comes back? In Something About You Cameron has to decide which comes first--her loyalty to her job or to her heart. I laughed my way from the very first page until the last as I followed the misadventures of Cameron and Jack. I felt for both of them as I learned just what their past involved but had no doubt that their passion would end up ruling the day. The first sarcastic quips quickly turned into innuendos between Jack and Cameron. On top of Jack and Cameron's quips, those of the secondary characters are just as engaging. There really was nothing about Something About You that I did not love. From the humor, the deep friendships and the deep love that was found, I have no choice but to Joyfully Recommend Something About You as a do not miss book. I laughed my way through Jack and Cameron's story and I bet you will, too.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not what I expected, but good
This is the first book I've read by Julie James. I was expecting a pure romantic story, but this one had a mystery mixed into it. I liked the story between Jack and Cameron. At times I didn't like the chapters switching between so many different characters POV, but it still flowed okay. Overall the story was funny at times, interesting, and a good read. I'll most likely read others by her.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - LOVED IT!!
There's "Something About You," I just can't put my finger on it?

Could it be that you'll laugh your derriere off? How about the lustful desires you mange to project upon yourself? Like, having a provocatively gorgeous FBI agent follow you around in & out of the bedroom? { >;o)~ Devilishly Wicked Grin } Or the constant "word fencing" between Jack & Cameron, causing you to beg them to descend upon their sexual frustrations they posses for one another?

Well all three were a definite "YES!" for me. I immensely enjoyed this novel. It was a quick, delightful, & gratifying read. And the legal logistics were fascinating as well.

My only complaint was that Ms. James revealed who the culprit was early on; however, she didn't disclose his/her motives. I would have undoubtedly preferred to be surprised at the end. Yet, overall it was an EXCELLENT story.

WELL DONE MS. JAMES, THIS NOVEL DESERVES WELL BEYOND A 5 STAR RATING!!
